Toilet Trouble and other News - June 2010

Everything has a season and it is definitely a building one for us. Aidan and the guys are roofing house number one, latrines are being built for 700 children in Kisozi and the 300 children of Lwanyama now have walls on their nursery and infant classrooms! Each building is a sign of your generosity and God’s amazing love for his children. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

JANEPHER is taken to court over a toilet!

Last month our health educator was taken to court and fined 20% of her monthly salary for not having her own latrine. Janepher shares an outdoor latrine with some of her neighbours which is common practice. She was told to build one immediately or face ongoing monthly fines. Other villagers are being threatened in this way.

The reason behind this is that the village may receive piped water and officials are demanding that each home has their own latrine before they will commence work. This is putting financial pressure on people to build quickly or suffer more. Perhaps it is time to do a bit of TOILET TWINNING? The idea would be to build up a loo fund so that we can help needy families who are trying to help themselves by part-funding their latrine.

Helping Dads to care for their kids

It is said that there is now free malaria treatment in Uganda but the current situation is that it costs a full-time labourer over a QUARTER of his weekly wage to buy tablets for his sick child. That is equivalent to a Dad on minimum wage in UK paying £65! We continue to treat each child we meet with malaria and to help its prevention by providing young children with their own nets. This work is more important than ever for the children.
