What Helping Hands did in 2008

Over 2000 children in eight school communities were cared for by our mobile health team every day of the school year. The good news is that each one has grown a little taller, a lot stronger and learnt loads at school! Here is an overview of what this care looks like:

  • 4011 little patients were treated by Joy for common diseases with a few individuals referred to a local health centre for further treatment.
  • 300+ health education lessons were carried out by Joy and Janepher, training 2000+ children in how to stay healthy.
  • 357 new nursery children received a mosquito net after being trained how to use it. Old nets were re-treated at the same time.
  • Home visits, by our team of Good Samaritans, took place to ensure nets were being used properly. On average 76% of the children are now using their nets properly on a regular basis.
  • A further latrine block has been completed so that 50% of the schools we work with have received a new triple block, increasing the ratio of latrines to pupils.
  • A piece of land was bought so that we can develop a staff base with accommodation for team members, visitors and training purposes.
  • A motorbike was acquired to provide Joy and Janepher with a more efficient means of transport.
  • One of our UK link schools has purchased a piece of land to allow their partner school to expand and avoid unhealthy over-crowding.
  • A fund has been set up to allow us to assist individuals in exceptional need. This has been used to assist families caring for individuals with cancer and for those in unsafe accommodation.
